Carlo Sinclair is looking to better himself. The twenty-three-year-old has given up hustling and moved back to the Carolina Lowcountry to stay with his best friend and mentor, Mistress Tillandsia—a professional dominatrix who gets her name from the scientific term for Spanish moss: Tillandsia usneoides. The job market is rough and the heat is oppressive, and while his motives for returning to his hometown were anything but honest, he is determined to carve out a life on the “up-and-up” in Gaston’s Landing, South Carolina. When the bodies of prostitutes turn up in garbage bags around town and kids from the local conversion therapy camp start to go missing, Carlo notices the crimes have an eerie similarity to the exploits of Gaston’s most infamous native son: a long-deceased serial killer and occultist named Marty L.
